SALES FACTORY’S GED KING WINS 2013 SMALL BUSINESS PERSON OF THE YEAR AWARD

Greensboro, NC (MAY 20, 2013) – Ged King, president of the award-winning Greensboro, NC research-based marketing firm, The Sales Factory, has been awarded the 2013 Small Business Person of the Year Award by the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce.

King, a graduate of NC State University, won the award based on his amazing business and personal transformations. While King initially struggled to run the company following his father’s death, over the past twelve years he has led the now award-winning and nationally recognized agency to a 1400% increase in profits. The staff has grown from 6 employees to a 30+-person operation and TSF continues to expand.

In addition to the business transformation, King also underwent a personal transformation. After deciding he was not where he wanted to be health-wise, he and another employee teamed up to encourage one another to get fit. Their results were so positive (weight loss, reduced blood pressure, increased productivity), King decided to make a concerted effort to create a health-focused corporate environment. Under King’s direction, TSF now takes a 360° approach to wellness, with the goal of encouraging and rewarding employees to enjoy work, live well and be happy. Since the inception of King’s wellness initiatives, TSF employees have lost weight, quit smoking, run their first 5K/marathon and taken up endurance cycling, among other accomplishments.

Many people run successful companies. But few of them do it with the courage, loyalty and visionary leadership of Ged King. His dedication to his family, community, company and individual employees is inspiring to all who know him.

I recently had the chance to sit down with a client who had an issue I’m seeing with greater frequency in the businesses that I encounter. This client had started a successful business and wanted to grow, but their efforts seemed blocked at every turn. If anything, they were almost going backward in sales.

Originally, this client was great at what they did, which is actually part of the problem. Now you may say, “Mike, I don’t see how being good at something is a problem.” I’ll agree that having a passion and being great at something is a plus—and the reason most people start businesses—but too often people forget that talent isn’t enough.

Briefly, here’s what happens: A young, handsome (or beautiful) entrepreneur like yourself, who loves making baskets and makes the best baskets in the world, starts a basket making company. Things go great. He (or she) is loving life, making baskets, and he (or she) starts selling a significant number of baskets.

Due to high demand, our young entrepreneur needs to hire two more basket makers. Unfortunately, the two new hires are not quite as good and quality begins to suffer. Instead of the business continuing to grow because of the added resources, it instead begins to plateau because the product is now just “good” and not “the best basket in the world.”

Okay, but what about the “best in the world baskets” made by our entrepreneur? With most of his (or her) time now spent on payroll or customer service issues (remember – people aren’t happy with the new sub-par baskets, especially existing clients), his (or her) overall basketwork is suffering as well.

Our young entrepreneur is left wondering, “What happened? Why isn’t my business growing? I know how to make the best baskets in the world but can’t get these new employees to do the same.” BOOM—therein lies the problem. The genius is tied up in the principal and guess what? Genius isn’t scaleable!

So, how do you recreate genius? Well friends, it comes down to creating a profitable, repeatable process. And it just so happens TSF excels at creating scaleable, genius process—for us and for our clients.

If you’d like more information about process or would like to see TSF’s patented 4-Part Process™ in action, let us know and we’ll be happy to set up a time to walk you through it.

The other day I was having a conversation with my wife. Although she is not a shopaholic, she finds spending time wandering around stores and perusing their products very entertaining. She can go to a store and spend 30 minutes or more “shopping” and then leave, thankfully for our finances, without buying a single product. Even though that particular trip did not impact the store’s bottom line, it definitely could affect future purchases. If you don’t agree, just ask my wife. She is actively building a consideration list of future purchases from the more entertaining stores.

With so many options vying for our consumer dollars, what is it that will actually make us part with our hard-earned cash?

Take this into consideration. You probably know that Netflix is creating unique content now. AMC came back from near death, no pun intended, with excellent programing such as The Walking Dead and Breaking Bad series. HBO is by far the best example of this strategy of providing unique content.

I believe all of these successes are intertwined with what is currently happening with content marketing. Unique content is the driver for video and television programming, as seen in my earlier examples. You can see efforts in the retailing sphere as well. Private labels and unique product lines are becoming the “unique content” for most major retailers. Brick-and-mortar stores are doing everything possible to find partners in order to have this “unique content” on the shelves.

Are you ready for this? Do you have relationships in place with big-box stores to start these conversations? Think about it. Does your product have a unique factor that would allow it to act as a store brand that rises above the clutter? Do you own a unique brand, product line or have some other unique offering? It is definitely an interesting era in the retail world and only those that understand their distinctive value proposition and are quick to adapt will thrive.
